Off to Sanibel and Captiva Islands today for more beach time and shell obsession. My Michelin guide touted these islands as the best "shelling" in America.
Two hours after departure, including a hour side trip thru Fort Myers courtesy of the Garmin "Fastest Route" and nearly 30 minutes of unbelievably slow "island speed" traffic, we arrived at the north end of Captiva Island and the public parking at the beach. Michelin had said "free" parking on Captiva (it was $4 for 2 hours) and the "shelling"? Well lets just say that it didn't hold a candle to what we found yesterday near Boca Grande. It was pretty pathetic and not worth a two hour drive. Pretty Beach though. Sunny when we left Rotunda, but overcast and spitting rain by the time get got there. 72 degrees.
Here's a view of Captiva Island Beach looking south.
After an hour or so, we headed back towards Fort Myers. Stopped at one of three island groceries for sandwiches and a bottle of Pinot Grigio and stopped on one of the causeway islands for lunch.
Fort Myers, the city of Palms, is home to the Thomas Edison and Henry Ford winter homes. Edison bought his in 1885 and Ford in 1916. Both beautiful homes with fabulous waterfront gardens.
The Edison Home (main house).
The Henry Ford home seen from the bay.
Edison's Laboratory (he spent more building and stocking it than he paid for his house).
The museum that was part of the exhibit had a terrific collection of Edison inventions. Dozens of models of movie projectors, early prototypes of electric lights, various versions of phonographs. Did you know that Edison invented The Tattoo pen? He had nearly 1100 patents in his name.
Cold front moving in tomorrow, it'll just be 65 so it might be a day of looking at condos and town homes. More then.
Good night and good luck.
