Lincoln is a historically preserved town that was the sight of the Lincoln County Wars that pitted two rival factions for control of both commerce and ranching in the county which once occupied one quarter of the state.
After his employer was murdered by men working for the rivals, the Kid took matters into his own hands and formed the Regulators to get some payback. After a gunfight that pretty much decimated both sides and ended the wars, Billy who was charged with murder escaped to Mesilla.
Just down the road is Capitan where Smokey the Bear was found badly burned after a forest fire and adopted by the Forest Service crews and the rest is history. He's burned at the State Park there.
We continued on to Corrizozo where the Valley of the Fires National Rec. Area is located. 45 miles long and 5 miles wide at some points it is a lava flow created by vents in the ground rather than a volcano.

Further down the Tularosa Basin towards Alamogordo is the Three Rivers Petroglyph Site. Over 20,000 glyphs are in the area and range from small geometric shapes to large animal reprsentations. A short hike takes you up a hill past hundreds of them with great views of the basin and the far off White Sands.

On to White Sands outside of Alamogordo.
A National Recreation site, it lies at the lower end of the White Sands Missile Range that runs the length of the Tularosa Basin all the way up to Corizozo.
After lunch she's ready to slide down the dunes.
