My day started off with a 1 hour plus, 4 mile walk along Morro Beach. The perfect, cloudless morning was a harbinger for my day ahead.
After breakfast at Carla's Diner, located next door to my motel, I headed out to Paso Robles for some wine tasting. Up Highway 1 to Cayucos I took Old Creek Road over to Highway 46.
This is Whalebone Reservoir outside Morro Bay and just off Old Creek Road.
That's the ocean in the far background.
Old Creek Road is one of those fabulous meandering back roads that I love about California. Full of live oaks and glimpses of green pasture it's made for cruising in a Shelby Mustang or Ferrari. I settled for my Toyota Camry. Great fun.
My first stop was Turleys.
Makers of very high end Zins, Turley's is run by the brother of Helen Turley who has been named Wine Spectator's Vintner/Winemaker of the year several times. As with any of the wineries in California, the more you talk the talk, the more samples you get. I bought a half case and I have to tell you every bottle is great.
Then, an hour later, off to Pasolivo. Pasolivo is a Olive oil maker that uses olives from its acreage in the area to make varietals infused with Lime, Tangerine, Rosemary. You suggest it, they'll probably make it at some point.
Then I visited one of Pat and Larry V.'s favorites. Adelaida. Tony was a very nice and knowledgeable host who showed me maps of the property and the new visitor center scheduled to open in March.
Next was Daou. Great views as well as very high end wines.
I stopped in at Le Cuvier for a taste and found nearly as nice a view and good, though not locally grown wines available at the tasting room.
My last stop was at Castoro where I selected a case to be shipped to Silver Cliff and a really nice host, Greg who worked for Columbia Records and promised to send me Joe Bonamassa's new release in March when it came out.
My last stop, prior to returning to my hotel for the evening was the "Windows on the Water" restaurant a nic with a great view of the Rock and Bay.
Here's the Kodomo Oysters from Washington.
Followed by a Wild Mushroom Risotto.
A couple of shops on the walk home. A photo and an nice print of an original painting and I was done for the night.
Tomorrow. Pismo Beach and hiking in the coastal range.
Cheers
