Feb 20 - Not My Presidents Day.
Bright and clear in Deming this morning after a nice sunset the previous evening. I got on I-10 and headed for Tucson.
The Florida Mountains at sunset.
About 20 miles outside of Lordsburg was my first destination of the day. Steins. Having passed it about the same amount of times that I've passed or bypassed Deming, I decided that I'd drop into the little ghost town and see what was what.
Well, it was closed. That's what. Only open on occasions Steins is a recreation of the mining town from the 1850's that had silver and gold among the minerals found there. Not much remains, a couple buildings and trailers for the 3 people who live there full time.
Then it was off to Bowie. I'd passed through before, well actually on got on the western on ramp after visiting Fort Bowie ten years ago or so, but I exited on the east side and drove through town. There are 449 folks that call it home (according to Wikipedia and the 2010 census) but I found very few active businesses. A couple of auto repair shops, two gas stations, both selling fresh jerky and locally grown pistachios and pecans (there were lots of trees) and of course a school.
The only business in Bowie. Jerky made from everything from python to ostrich.
Total time in town. 8 minutes max. Curiosity satisfied.
All along I-10 from at least Las Cruces, billboards try to entice you to stop at exit 322 and see the THING!! What is it? Can you guess?? Well after all these years I can say I've seen it....but. Due to the confidentiality agreements that management makes all visitors sign prior to paying the steep one dollar fee, I am prohibited from disclosing what I now know. Guess you'll just have to check it out yourself or drive on by like I did for years.
Sushi for dinner at a Hibachi place. Mediocre and expensive.
